Jared Kirui did his Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology at Makerere University, Uganda. Thereafter, he worked as a research assistant at The United States Army Medical Research Unit-Kenya. Here, he was involved in monitoring HIV patients’ viral load counts and their response to drugs by sequencing HIV genomes to identify resistance mutations. Between 2013 and 2015, Jared worked in the group of Dr. Gorben Pijlman at Wageningen University in the Netherlands where he received a Master of Biotechnology degree. During his thesis he performed research on Salmonid alphavirus glycoproteins and the use of recombinant baculovirus as a vaccine delivery vector. Afterwards, he worked as a research assistant at The International Livestock Research Institute in Kenya. Here, he was part of a team that produced vaccines against contagious bovine/caprine pleuropneumonia and performed clinical trials. In October 2017 he was admitted to the PhD program Infection Biology/DEWIN at the Hannover Medical School and received a PhD stipend from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). His PhD project in the group of Dr. Gisa Gerold focuses on cell entry proteomics of alphaviruses especially chikungunya virus.
