Host Genetic Background Strongly Affects Pulmonary microRNA Expression before and during Influenza A Virus Infection

Frank Pessler; Matthias Preusse

Key message

Using two inbred mouse strains of differential susceptibility to influenza A virus infection, we found that miRNAs expressed in lung (even before infection) constitute highly specific biomarkers for host susceptibility and disease severity.

Translational perspective

Using human biosamples, we are planning to test whether a these miRNAs can serve as prognostic biomarkers for severe influenza in humans.
