Thomas Pietschmann is director of the Institute of Experimental Virology at TWINCORE. He studied biology at the University of Würzburg and the Duke University (Durham, NC, USA) and completed his studies in 1996. He received his PhD degree from the University of Würzburg (Institute for Virology) based on his studies about the morphogenesis of retroviruses. Subsequently, in 2000, he joined the group of Professor Ralf Bartenschlager as postdoctoral fellow. Together with him, he moved to the Department of Molecular Virology at Heidelberg University. Based in Heidelberg, Thomas Pietschmann established an Emmy Noether junior research group with a focus on the morphogenesis and cell entry of hepatitis C virus. In spring 2007, he and his group were appointed to TWINCORE. Thomas Pietschmann is elected member of the scientific advisory board of the Society of Virology and of the DFG panel 204 (Microbiology, Virology, Immunology). He is speaker of the DZIF site Hannover/Braunschweig and of the programme “Infection Research” of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research.
