Winkler, Melina

PhD student

Melina Winkler studied biochemistry and molecular biology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel and at the Università degli Studi di Perugia in Italy. During her studies she gained interest in virology and wrote her master’s thesis on resistance-associated mutations of varicella zoster virus in the group of Prof. Dr. Helmut Fickenscher at the Institute of Infection Medicine in Kiel.

In August 2019, she joined the group of Prof. Dr. Thomas Pietschmann at the Institute of Experimental Virology as a PhD student to study the species tropism of a mouse-adapted hepatitis C virus. Additionally, since the COVID-19 pandemic, she has been working on the discovery of broad-spectrum coronavirus antivirals and their host targets. She is enrolled in the PhD program Infection Biology within the graduate school of the MHH (Hanover Biomedical Research School - HRBS).
