The focus of his research activity includes the immune response of the body to virus infections. Ulrich Kalinke studied biology in Hanover and obtained a PhD from the German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg. Following a post-doc phase and a period spent as research assistant at the Universitätsspital Zurich, he spent four years researching at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Monterotondo, near Rome (Italy). In conclusion, he became head of the Immunology department at the Paul Ehrlich Institute in Langen.
